How long is a learner's licence valid in South Africa?
A South African learner's licence is valid for 24 months (2 years) from the date of issue, and it cannot be extended or renewed. If it expires before you pass your driving test, you must apply, pay and write the learner's test again from scratch.
Why the 24-month clock matters
Driving-test slots at busy DLTCs can take months to secure, and many learners need more than one attempt. If you book your driving test late in your learner's validity and fail, you can run out of runway. Treat the 24 months as: book driving lessons immediately, and aim to take the driving test in the first year, not the second.
What happens if my learner's licence expires?
- You may no longer drive on a public road, even supervised.
- You cannot take the driving test on an expired learner's.
- You must redo the full learner's process: application, eye test, fees, and the written/CLLT test.
Can I write the learner's test before my birthday?
Age is measured on the date of the test: 16 for Code 1 (≤125cc), 17 for Code 2, 18 for Code 3. Many centres allow booking ahead so the test date falls on or after your eligibility date — ask your DLTC.
